After-School All-Stars Puget Sound Youth Lead Community Change for

Global Youth Service Day, April 19-20, 2017

SEATTLE, WA, APRIL 19, 2017 – On April 19, After-School All-Stars (ASAS) Puget Sound students from Meeker Middle School will volunteer at the Danny Woo Community Garden in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District. As students assist with soil preparation for Spring planting, they will also learn about the region’s rich cultural history and the impact of community gardening in urban centers. The young people join millions of others around the globe who will celebrate Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) during the weekend of April 21-23. Editor’s note: Media are invited to attend ASAS Puget Sound’s Global Youth Service Day activities. Interviews and photos are available upon request.

In partnership with Youth Service America (YSA), ASAS Puget Sound’s environmental stewardship project also includes a youth-led service-learning activity at Meeker Middle School in Renton on April 20. Students who volunteered at the Danny Woo Community Garden will share what they learned about soil preparation and urban gardening as they lead project activities for the entire ASAS Puget Sound program. Youth leaders will work in groups with their peers to prepare soil and plant seeds of their choice in their own biodegradable containers to take home and share with their families.

Global Youth Service Day recognizes the positive impact that young people have on their communities 365 days a year. GYSD is celebrated in more than 135 countries with youth-led service projects and community events. “We know that young people are uniquely suited to help solve problems – if given the opportunity,” said Steven A. Culbertson, CEO and president of YSA and leader of GYSD. “Today’s social and environmental problems are immense; we need youth in the Puget Sound region to be leaders and problem solvers today, not just the leaders of a distant tomorrow.”

ASAS Puget Sound provides free, comprehensive after-school programs that keep students safe and help them succeed in school and life. The organization’s vision is for students to be healthy, graduate high school, pursue college, find careers they love and give back to their communities. With a special focus on middle schoolers, ASAS Puget Sound fuels students’ individual passions by tailoring program activities to align with their interests. Launched in Fall 2016, ASAS Puget Sound is the newest chapter of After-School All-Stars, one of the largest school-based after-school providers network in the country.

Celebrating 29 years, Global Youth Service Day celebrates and mobilizes the millions of young people who improve their communities through service. GYSD is the largest service event in the world and the only one dedicated to the contributions that children and youth make 365 days of the year. GYSD is celebrated each April in more than 135 countries on 6 continents, with young people working together to address the world’s most critical issues and change their communities.
